With Spring Break and Summer fast approaching I thought I’d share some tips when using a vacation rental.  I have stayed at hotels, and travel resorts and time shares like Trend West but I have to admit I was a little nervous when we first rented a vacation rental from someone I did not know.

In staying at a hotel or larger travel resort, there is on-site staff, which you can contact if you have a problem of any kind.  There are benefits to staying at hotels, you have maid service, room service, fresh towels daily if you like, usually breakfast available that you don’t have to prepare.

I have to say though now staying a number of times using sites such as Flip Key, Airbnb, and others I have had a pleasant experience.   I frequently discuss with my friends one of the greatest benefits of using a vacation home is the space, especially with a family.  Even if you have a large suite at a hotel, you usually don’t have two living spaces, a backyard, multiple bedrooms and bathrooms, your own private pool etc.  I especially appreciate this space for longer trips.

If our family is going away for a weekend or a couple of days I prefer to stay at a hotel, but if we are going away for a week or longer, the extra space comes in handy.  Having a full kitchen for meals is very helpful and budget friendly with a family.  I have four boys so I appreciate the extra space for them to play and not be so quiet with a private residence rather than a hotel, with neighbors’ right next door.

That being said, if you are single or maybe a few friends traveling don’t rule out vacation rentals and think they are only for families.  In my research, there are many apartment/condo type vacation rentals available and also smaller homes that can work for you.

We stayed at a vacation rental recently when we went to Disneyland, it was less expensive than a hotel stay at Embassy Suites, which we were planning on.  It was a two-story, 6 bedroom home with a beautiful swimming pool, hot tub and splash pad in the backyard, it had a full kitchen, and it was right around the corner from Disneyland.  We did not even use it for lunches and dinners the days we were at Disneyland and California Adventure, but again we stayed days before we went to the parks and days after, which was nice to be able to BBQ at the home and have the pool all to ourselves.  Our boys shared a room often but it was nice that if they wanted to they could each have their own room.  We were able to watch the nightly firework show right out our bedroom window each night, it worked out great.

When booking your vacation rental keep these things in mind:
  1. Location – Know if you want to be right on the beach, or if you don’t mind traveling a little bit to the beach or amusement attraction you are visiting.  You will usually pay more to be near the water or city attraction; but consider where you will spend most of your time; it might be worth the extra cost.
  2. Use a Verified Site – I strongly recommend using a popular site that has some kind of guarantee behind your stay.  With the many scams I hear about it is better to use a site that is verified rather than losing money to a scam artist.  You want to get a deal but with an authentic property.   I have used Flip Key, Air & B and Vacasa.  Do your research!  Do they have a website?  Do they have reviews from other vacation goers?  Many owners will list their name, or social media profile, check out their Facebook page.  Are there recent pictures or just the staged photos for the listing.
  3. What is Included – Find out what’s included before you book.  If you have a maintenance issue, is someone available to contact that will be nearby.  What is the bedding, towel situation?  Does it come with pots & pans?  What dishes, utensils are available?  Is there a washing machine and dryer?  I have found in my stays that everything has been there, I have always brought my own laundry soap and dish detergent, bathroom shampoo, etc. but I have found at each of my stays sample versions of these products were available, but that is something to confirm ahead of time.
  4. Timing – Know that just like a hotel if you book a trip during peak season or around holidays or special events you are going to pay more.  Research when the peak season is for the city you are visiting, if possible travel off-season you will save money and have less traffic and tourists around.  Find out what the weather will be like when you travel, so you can plan accordingly.
  5. Contract – Read the fine print, are there cleaning fees, a deposit, and is it refundable?  What is the check-in time and check-out time?  Sometimes these times are negotiable if it is not rented the day before your stay and if someone is not checking in the day you are leaving.  Are there any other fees for linens or other items?
Know that sometimes when using a vacation rental it might take longer than just booking a hotel. There is more research involved, reading reviews and finding the exact location and space that will work for you.  Sometimes you go back and forth with the owner about availability and price.  If you can stay flexible and keep an open mind I think you will find some great places out there.

I am going to link the sites we have used because I think they were great and if you are like me a little hesitant about trying vacation rentals, I appreciate knowing a real family who has actually used a service.

I was not compensated in any way for this post, these are all my opinions through experience with these sites.

3 Story Cabin that had 4 bedrooms, two bathrooms, an air hockey table, Wii and other amenities for our kids, we loved it.  My parents actually stayed with us on this trip, it was great.

The house near Disneyland we stayed at that was fully decorated with Disney characters. There was a Mickey themed Room and matching bathroom, A Nemo Room and Bathroom, A Cars Room and matching bathroom, a Frozen Room, a Lego Room and a master bedroom with a dalmatians decorated bathroom.  There was a swimming pool with slide, splash pad and hot tub.

Our family went to see Disney on Ice presents Worlds of Enchantment featuring Disney Pixar’s Cars, The Little Mermaid, Frozen and the Toy Story gang at the Golden One Center in Sacramento.

I loved every minute of this presentation and so did my boys.  There was a lot of action to keep their attention, throughout the entire presentation.

Mickey, Minnie, Donald and Goofy opened the show and made appearances between each set change to introduce the different “worlds”.

My boys favorite part was Toy Story, they loved the soldiers that danced, the claw and parachuting soldier that came from the ceiling.

As a mom I greatly appreciate the intermission time which is about 15-20 minutes, great for bathroom breaks, no one misses the show and it is nice to get up and stretch your legs.  As a mom of all boys I appreciate the mix of characters, and that it’s not all about princesses.  Though their favorite part was Cars, and Toy Story they were also entertained during Frozen and The Little Mermaid with all the lights and action.

Disney on Ice Presents Worlds of Enchantment did not disappoint!  It was magical and exciting!  Disney did a great job with set design and costumes, don’t they always!  The skating and effects were awesome!  I would highly recommend Disney on Ice for all families.

If it is your first time visiting the Golden One Center, I recommend you give yourself plenty of time to arrive and locate parking, especially allocate time for traffic flow.  There are quite a few parking garages to choose from or street parking if available.

I visited SacPark.org and reserved my parking ahead of time.  It was super easy, I reserved parking right on my phone, paid $10 and it gave me a QR code to show the parking attendant.  I chose the 520 Capitol Mall Garage, the entrance was on N Street and it was a quick walk.  Even at night, it was well lit, and there are crowds of people parking and walking with you to and from Golden One Center.

We were provided with complimentary tickets to the show, all opinions are 100% our own.

Here are some pictures from Disney On Ice Worlds of Enchantment.

I used the 520 Capitol Mall Garage for $10.  The walk was fine.

Disney On Ice Worlds of Enchantment at the Golden One Center continues until Monday, February 20th.  Get your tickets at www.DisneyOnIce.com, Ticketmaster Retail Locations, the Box Office or call 1-800-745-3000.

Disclosure: I am a Feld Family Ambassador, and in exchange for my time and efforts in attending shows and reporting my opinion within this blog, as well as keeping you advised of the latest discount offers, Feld Entertainment has provided me with complimentary tickets to Feld shows.  Even though I receive these benefits, I always give an opinion that is 100% mine.

Facts & Tips
  • Parking at Golden One Center was $10 with PRE-RESERVED PARKING.  If you just show up it is $20 at the nearest garage that is directly across the street and it is $15 at the lot I parked at if you do no pre-reserve.
  • Arrive early!  I like to arrive between 6 PM - 6:15 PM (Find parking, Go through Security, Use the Restroom, First Pick at the Vendors).
  • Park near a light, it is dark when you leave and this makes it easy to find your car.
  • In the middle of the show there will be a intermission time.  As soon as you hear the intercom announcement coming on, hurry to the restrooms, you will avoid the lines.
  • If  you are are purchasing a snow cone or souvenir from the concession vendors, I recommend, purchasing before the show starts or at the beginning of intermission.  The lines are long if you wait till after the performance, or if you hesitate during intermission.
  • They sell popcorn and cotton candy right at your seat, also Coke and Diet Coke, before the performance and during intermission.
  • Snow cone souvenir cups are my boys favorite depending on the character cup you choose prices are $12, & $15.
  • Popcorn and Cotton Candy come with a Souvenir hat and are $12.
  • There is food for sale pizza, nachos, pretzels, ice cream bars, not sure on the pricing since we ate before we arrived.
  • If you have little ones that want to dress in their princess dresses or Disney costumes, do it, there are many kids dressed up.  My boys usually wear their favorite Disney T-Shirt.
  • My boys love that I bring glow in the dark necklaces/bracelets from the dollar store. They do sell spinning and light up toys, being a frequent Disney on Ice attendee, they already have the spinning and light up toy and sword.
  • Plan on the show with intermission lasting 7 PM to 9 PM.
  • Baby bags, plastic bottles, and formula are permitted in Golden 1 Center as long as the bag is no larger than 16” x 16” x 8".
  • Child Admission: In most instances, children under twenty-four (24) months of age are admitted free of charge in Golden 1 Center for events provided that they sit on an adult’s lap. Please note that some events may have varying age requirements. Please see specific show guidelines for more information.

WORLDS OF ENCHANTMENT
Sacramento, Feb. 16-20

**By Popular Demand, Featuring Magical Moments From
#1 Animated Movie of all Time, Frozen**

Rev up for non-stop family fun with four of your favorite Disney stories when Disney On Ice presents Worlds of Enchantment comes to Stockton and Sacramento!  This delightful ice spectacular showcases beloved characters from Disney • Pixar’s Cars, Toy Story 3, Disney’s The Little Mermaid plus the enchanting Academy Award®-winning Frozen.  Produced by Feld Entertainment, Disney On Icepresents Worlds of Enchantment is performing in Sacramento from Feb. 16-20 at the Golden 1 Center.

We are so excited about going to see Disney On Ice Worlds of Enchantment.  My boys and I love attending this show.  Every time we have attended we have had a fun time together, making memories.  As a mom with little ones I really appreciate that they have an intermission time.  Makes it easy to take a bathroom break and not miss any part of the show.

My boys love to purchase a snow cone in one of the character cups; they drink out of those cups for months after the event talking about their favorite parts of the show during dinner time.  I love seeing the excitement on their face and hearing the thrill in their voices the days leading up to the show, during the show and after the show.

You have until midnight on February 9th to enter my giveaway for 4 Tickets to the Opening Night Show!
