With my third pregnancy I learned in a greater way that each pregnancy and delivery is different.  I learned not to be in a hurry and to truly rest in God.  I had a great pregnancy with no morning sickness or complications, but because my other two boys were born before there due date, I thought for sure my third born would be born early too.   I planned and took time off work well in advance before my due date, planning on an early birth.

I was due on April 15th and on Monday April 4th I started having light contractions.  My husband at this time was working a little over an hour away, which had me on edge because I had my babies quickly I was concerned if he would make it on time if I went into labor.  Having this concern produced anxiety in me in these last few weeks.  That Monday April 4th I called Jeff at work saying I think it was time.  Because Manny was born so quick I was erring on the side of caution as to get to the hospital quick so we wouldn’t have to race there like last time.  I know after having two babies you would think I would be able to tell the difference between Braxton hicks and real contractions but again because the anxiety I was having I was sure it was time.  I called my mom and sister as well who would watch my other two children, as soon as my husband, mom and sister arrived to watch the boys my contractions stopped.

When I called my husband telling him I think I am in labor, he called our church to ask for prayer.  I remember after he arrived home and realized I was not in labor, he called to tell the church it was a false alarm, I remember feeling embarrassed and a little frustrated that he called so quickly before he arrived home.  Which after the fact I apologized to him for being edgy over that.  I should be grateful that my husband thought of calling and getting others praying for us.  Instead of being focused on the fact that it was false labor and you had people praying when it was nothing.  So silly when I think about it now.

Even though my contractions stopped I still thought for sure the baby would come that night or definitely that week because I never had false labor with the other two or any Braxton hicks, well boy was I wrong, that week came and went and every day I kept wondering if that would be the day the baby would come and nothing.

Well every day I just kept trying to stay busy cleaning and preparing to be ready for my baby’s arrival.  I would go on walks and pray that all would be supernatural and thank God it was, God is so faithful and so good, I am so grateful for the privilege to carry children and give birth.  I am amazed at each pregnancy and delivery at the true miracle childbirth really is.  And I stand in awe of God’s greatness and goodness each time I have had the privilege to experience such wonderful deliveries.

I was scheduled for a doctor appointment on my due date at 7:45 AM well I woke up around 4:30 in the morning with some light cramps, and so I thought maybe today is the day, I knew I had prayed that I would not be induced.  I got up and took a shower and got dressed to see if my contractions would stop or continue and they continued, so I woke my husband and called my mom and sister around 5 AM to see if she could come watch the boys.  We left for the hospital around 6 AM arrived at 6:30 AM and Matteo was born at 7:11 AM.  Matteo Elijah Briggs, Born 4/15/2011 @ 7:11 a.m. – 8lbs., 4oz., 21”.

It was the perfect amount of time, I had time to get checked in, actually get in a gown this time, and they checked the baby’s heartbeat, I felt settled and ready to birth, instead of the panic that was on my last delivery.

I had a great nurse, who connected with what I wanted, I told her I did not want an IV, this was my third baby, I had my babies quick, when we arrived at the hospital I was dilated to 7 and was very calm.  I remember her saying “okay looks like you know what you are doing I’m excited to see a quick birth.”  The nurse was amazed at how quick and easy everything was and I was grateful it was quick but not scary quick like my previous one.  I am also grateful for how God lines things up.  When we arrived at the hospital to check in, my doctor was there even though she was not scheduled to be in that morning she was scheduled to be at her office remember I had an appointment that very morning, she was not even in her scrubs, as soon as she knew we were checking in, she got into scrubs and prepared for the birth.

I know the reason why I have had easy deliveries, is because I read the book by Jackie Mize and grabbed hold of the truth that we were created to give birth, and it does not have to be horrible.  I know because I listened to the audio version of the book frequently, every time I went into labor, I had the confessions, and scriptures from the bible memorized and that is what helps me remain calm and focused.  I would replay Jackie’s voice in my head.  I know we have had the right nurse for each delivery that we needed because we prayed for all right doctors and nurses.  This is very important, the nurses are the ones you will spend most of your time with, the doctor comes in for the delivery, but the moments before and after are spent with your nurse, you want to invest time in praying for who will be supporting you, working with you in labor and tending to you and your baby after.

Big brother Diego, so excited.

Big brother Emanuel, so excited.

Big brother trying to help the baby not cry.

This week on the blog!

I find that my kids like to know what is planned for the day and week.  Even at a young age, ages 3, 5 and 7 like their mother who likes to know what is happening.  They do a lot better when they know the plan.
Have you ever had a child have a meltdown when leaving from visiting grandma’s or a friend’s house, or leaving a birthday party?

I have had had to carry out a crying child who did not want to leave, it is not fun at all.  I have found that when I give them some structured detail they do much better, meltdowns are not as frequent for example.  We are going to cousin’s birthday party, I will tell my children.  “We will play and visit, after they open presents and we have cake and ice cream, we are going to leave.”  Then I will go over to them and tell them finish playing because we are leaving in twenty minutes.  I make the rounds of helping clean up, saying good byes.  I find my children will leave in a happier mood with this preparation.

Even with nap time, if I tell my youngest son, after lunch, you can play for 20 minutes, and then we are going to lay down for a nap, and then go pick up brothers from school.  He lies down much easier, knowing the plan for the afternoon.  I often use the timer on my microwave and he knows when the timer goes off, it is nap time.  Another example is when we visit a park, I will give them some warning before I say it is time to go, I will say we are leaving in 20 minutes, then I will say okay you have 10 more minutes what would you like to do before we leave.

Another tip, with preparing kids.  When attending someone else’s birthday party, I always remind my boys, this is “Sammy’s” birthday party, this is his special day, we are going to take him a present, sing him happy birthday and he is going to open the presents.  They are not your presents to open; your birthday is in “July” remember how much fun you had at your birthday?  He probably won’t open up all the toys unless his mom says it is okay, so you be a helper for your friend and be happy for his special day.

If you have a change in your normal routine, for example, extra nights out, at church events, sporting events, family outings.  Prepare your children early in the week.  Remind them this is the week, we are going to brother’s soccer game on Wednesday, remind them, this is the week daddy is out of town for work on Thursday and Friday.  Whatever the change up is, they will flow easier with the schedule change if they know about it.

On the other hand, if the change up is something exciting for them, like they are spending the night down a friend’s house, or you’re going to John’s Incredible Pizza on Friday.  These types of fun things I don’t always tell them with much advance, or else everyday you’ll hear “is today the day I go to Sammy’s house?”  “Is today the day we are going to pizza?”  So things like this I try and wait just a couple days before.  Also because what if the sleep over is canceled or moved to another date, then you have to handle that disappointment which can be difficult for a four year old to understand why.

I find most children like routine and structure.  I find that when that routine or structure is changed or they were not prepared for that change, it can be more difficult.  I think as parents we should remember children have not fully developed communication skills and expressing themselves when they have a disappointment, or change up.

With that being said, when they do have a meltdown, I find if I remain calm, remind them I love them, and their behavior is inappropriate things regroup much easier.  When I slip into feeling embarrassed, or lose my temper, the meltdown seems to last longer.

As a parent, we have all been there, with a child having a bad day, bad moment, there is no need to feel embarrassed.  Your child is not the only one who has cried or thrown a fit, because they had to leave, leave the park, leave a friends, etc.

I hope these tips help you prepare your children in the future and help you experience fewer meltdowns.

Budgeting is a basic tool for managing your finances.  Unfortunately because of the negative connotation that most people have about budgeting we avoid it.  We think of budgeting as restricting.  We think of budgeting like extra work.  I recently attended a leadership class where they taught if you know the “why” of what you are doing, then you will be better equipped to effectively complete whatever it is you are doing with purpose and direction, in knowing the why.

Look at budgeting as liberating, look at budgeting as giving you choices of what to do with your money, instead of your money telling you what to do, you are telling your money what to do.  Remind yourself with budgeting you enable a plan and budget for fun things that you enjoy not just bills, entertainment, vacation, etc.  So although there is work involved in sticking to your budget, the benefits far outweigh the work.

Ten Benefits of Budgeting
1.   Quality of life – When you budget you tell your money where to go, instead of wondering where it went at the end of the month.  You will live more intentionally.  You get to plan and prepare for those fun things you desire in your life, vacation, new car, etc.  Your quality of life will improve as you budget and plan your money.

2.  Accomplishing goals – With budgeting you live more mindful of your goals.  Do you have a goal to live debt free, to give a larger amount to charity, to buy a new car?  Whatever your goals are, with budgeting, you will plan and prepare to actually accomplish those goals instead of just wishing you could give, wishing you could buy a new car.  Budgeting is your action plan to accomplish your goals.  Say you want to save $2,500 in a year, break that goal down, what must you save per month, per week.  Doing this will make your goals more attainable.

3.  Priorities – In budgeting, you will have a clear picture of your priorities.  Many times we say we want to give more, save more, pay more on our debt.  But when you see your budget on paper and realize what portion is going to those things you say you want verses, cable TV, eating out, frivolous spending, etc.  You will be able to prioritize properly and know what is really important to you.  It will also help you see in a greater way how much is coming in and where it is all going to, you will make wiser choices when you see your budget on paper.

4.  You will Save More – When you are aware of the many categories you have in operating your household, you will be able to make changes and adjustments so you can save more money.  Not only in savings accounts, but I find you will be more frugal, and look for better ways to spend your money, to help stretch your dollar.

5.  You will be more organized – When you budget, it is more likely that you know where your bills are, where your statements are.  You will be better prepared for tax season.  I also find as you budget and become more organized in your finances, this will flow into other areas of your life.  Organizing one thing in your life will encourage you to organize other areas in your life.

6.  Less Stress – Budgeting allows you to plan and prepare for emergencies.  As you budget you can build an emergency fund.  When you have an unexpected flat tire, other vehicle repair, house repair, you will have finances set apart for that.  Which will prevent extra stress in your life.  Going to bed knowing you have a budget in place, will help you sleep better.  You won’t lay awake wondering if you made that payment.

7.  Happier Marriage – When you have a written budget your spouse will be aware of your financial situation.  You will have less fights over money.  As you work as a team and discuss the family budget your spouse will be aware of what they have to work with for grocery shopping, clothing shopping, entertainment, etc.  Budgeting helps you be on the same page, it really helps all your relationships, it will help you parent your children better, you will be able to train and teach them how to handle money.  Budgeting at its best is a family affair, not just one person’s job.

8.  Problem Prevention – I find when you budget and plan ahead of time, you will have less “emergencies”.  You will be aware in advance if there is something that needs to change, maybe your income changes seasonally.  In budgeting you can plan for those changes.  My husband used to be in the construction industry, with budgeting we were able to budget, plan and prepare for the winter months, when our income was lower.  Have you ever noticed the friend’s in your life who always have emergencies are not the best at planning, budgeting, and preparing?

9.  Debt Free Living – The ultimate goal is to live debt free, when you budget and plan you will be able to pay cash even for large items.  I know some people are going to finance a car, or finance a larger purchase.  In budgeting you will be aware of how much debt you can actually afford.  You will be able to enlist the six month rule and save and plan for larger purchases, which will save you from making impulse buys.  If you have debt, in budgeting, you will be more apt to attack that debt and pay it off quicker.

10.  You will have more money – With budgeting and properly preparing for your bills you will avoid late fees and interest which will give you more money to work with.  You will be able to eliminate or cut back on frivolous spending, making it seem as if you received a raise.  I also have seen as people get there finances in order, it is very common that they receive a promotion or new job an increase in their finances.

I hope after reading these ten benefits of budgeting, if you have not been budgeting or struggling with your budget, you will be motivated and encouraged to budget.  Remember budgeting is work, but think about all the benefits you receive as a result of living on a budget.  Remind yourself of all the different areas it affects: Relationships, Health, Goal Setting, Debt free living, Promotion & Increase.

When you get married, it is not only a merging of two lives but two families.  With the upcoming holidays approaching have you discussed where you will spend Thanksgiving and Christmas?

It is important to discuss this ahead of time and both decide what works for your family.  We have been taught to pray and ask God where to be which is important; we should desire to be in the right place at the right time no matter the occasion.  What if you are supposed to spend the holidays with a friend or new neighbor, there are times when you need to be out of town and times when travel would not be wise.

I know a young man who prayed about where to spend Thanksgiving one year, it was not where he would normally go, he ended up at a couple in the churches house where a friend of his also spent Thanksgiving, his friend expectantly passed away shortly after that.  He has fond memories of having that quality time with his friend, which he would not have if he had not prayed about where to be and just went where he normally went.

We live near both my parents and my husband’s parents.  Thankfully we all attend the same church, and both sets of parents are friends.  This is a huge blessing.

I once heard a story of a couple who every Mother’s day would visit both sets of mom’s, they would load up all the children and play yard and all that comes with babies and travel to both homes.  One day the husband realized what a toll that was on his wife who was also a mother; he realized Mother’s day was a lot of work for his wife who was a young mother.  They decided one mother’s day to stay home and just celebrate at home, with their family.

I have also discussed a variation of this with my husband, I like input from him for both sets of parents celebrating Mother’s Day and Father’s Day.  It is no fun for me to have to do all the planning for Mother’s Day gifts for my mom, my mother in-law, my pastor’s wife who I like to give flowers, money or something to honor as the spiritual mother of our church.  Mother’s day can become a lot of work and be dreaded.  One of my favorite Mother’s day was when we hosted a brunch at our house, which I enjoyed, because everyone came over, though it was work, it was enjoyable.  I did not feel like I was running all around.  This past year, both mom’s, all the sister’s and sister-in-laws went to lunch and a movie, while the husbands watched the kids.  That was really nice for all moms involved, there was no clean up, we were able to talk and enjoy each other and relax.

As a married couple I understand it is important to honor your parents, visit your parents, and spend time with family.  There also comes a time for creating your own family traditions and celebrations.  Take into consideration your wife who a lot of time does a lot of the planning, preparing, gift buying, etc.

We usually spend Christmas Eve with my; we go to Christmas Eve service at our church, then go back to our house, and eat, sometimes we have done dinner, dessert, drove around looking at Christmas lights, other times we have kept it simple with only dessert and presents.  This gives my parents the opportunity to see the grand-kids open their presents from them and enjoy the Christmas Season together.

My in-laws usually schedule a Briggs Christmas get together on another date other than Christmas or Christmas Eve.  With everyone’s busy schedule, school Christmas plays, extended family, etc. this has worked well for us to get together, exchange gifts, enjoy my mother in laws famous lasagna and spend time together on a date other than Christmas.  Everyone helps bringing drinks, desserts, rolls, salad (my sister in-law Colleen makes an amazing salad with dried cranberries, walnuts and a yummy vinaigrette).

This enables each of our families to celebrate with our own families on Christmas morning, wake up, read the Christmas story, open presents, eat breakfast and watch the kids play with their new things.

Thanksgiving we start out every year at church for Praise and Pancakes at 7 AM, one of my favorite church services.  Everyone comes in there pajamas, we each give praise to God for all His blessings and then eat pancakes together.  For the past seven years I have hosted Thanksgiving dinner at my house, my parents always come over, depending if my in-laws have other engagements, they usually will stop by for dessert or to say hi.  We usually invite a few people over who do not have family nearby or somewhere to go for Thanksgiving.  My mom usually cooks the turkey and I cook all the sides, and we both have our favorite desserts we make.  In the beginning years when we had no children, we had thanksgiving a couple times at both sets of parents, a couple times at our church who hosted a thanksgiving dinner, and one time we went out of town on Thanksgiving, which was really nice.  I enjoy hosting Thanksgiving, I like to cook, I have smaller children, who at our house have their bikes to ride, trampoline to jump on, and things to keep them busy.

I encourage you to consider each other when it comes to holiday’s, consider your family’s needs as well, do you have a family member who might not be with you much longer due to age, spend time with them before they go.  Do you need a low key holiday celebration, to truly relish in why we celebrate, instead of being caught up in all the festivities and being stressed and fighting with each other.  Know the season you are in, not just holiday season, but the season your family is in at any given moment, be sensitive to what is truly important, more than gifts, decorations, big celebrations it is family, it is being thankful, it is creating memorable and lasting memories that your children will have when they are grown.

Be considerate of your in-laws and extended family members, maybe a sister in-law is hosting.  If you have a lot of family members who like to cook and host, take turns, you could try a progressive dinner, where you visit each house for one course of the meal.  We did this one Christmas, again not on actual Christmas day but the weekend before, it was a lot of fun.  We were able to see each family members Christmas decorations and enjoy everyone’s cooking.

Family and Holidays

When you get married, it is not only a merging of two lives but two families.  With the upcoming holidays approaching have you discussed where you will spend Thanksgiving and Christmas?

It is important to discuss this ahead of time and both decide what works for your family.  We have been taught to pray and ask God where to be which is important; we should desire to be in the right place at the right time no matter the occasion.  What if you are supposed to spend the holidays with a friend or new neighbor, there are times when you need to be out of town and times when travel would not be wise.

We were so excited to find out we were expecting baby #2, we were excited for another blessing and excited that our son Diego would be a big brother.  I knew what a wonderful experience God had blessed me with my first pregnancy I started to stand on God’s Word and knew this delivery would be even easier now that I knew what to expect.  I used my “Supernatural Childbirth” book by Jackie Mize, every day, listened to the audio as often as I could.  I listened while I worked at my father in-laws roofing company, as I typed and did bookkeeping, the audio was playing on my computer.  I spoke the prayers and confessions in the back of the book, just as I did with my first baby.

I had no morning sickness or any complications throughout my pregnancy.  I also only gained 18 pounds during this pregnancy which I was excited about because my first pregnancy I gained 40 pounds.  We had an ultrasound at the 20 week mark and found out Diego was going to have a baby brother, we were happy all was well and happy to have two boys close in age.

I was due July 15, which our doctor was going to be leaving for a mission’s trip on July 11, so I was praying this baby would come before she left town.  As June was wrapping up my husband also received a new job, which he was going to be out of town for a week of training starting Monday, July 13, which again had me asking God, to have this baby come before then so my husband would be there.  I was not asking for the baby to come super early, I know God ordained pregnancy to be 40 weeks, and I never want a baby to come early no matter how anxious you get towards the end of pregnancy.  I wanted the baby to be in as long as possible, to be born healthy and strong, but I was thinking just before the due date and before my Dr. and husband are out of town would be great.

Tuesday, June 30, I had a regular doctor appointment scheduled that morning; I also had a list of errands to run.  At my doctor appointment there was nothing out of the norm, they measured my belly, listened to the heart beat and that was it.  I was in nesting mode and trying to prepare and get everything ready for when the baby would come.  I actually went shopping for a friend’s baby shower gift that morning after my appointment and grocery shopping.  The shower was a few weeks away but I wanted to have the gift taken care of and wrapped.  When I arrived home later in the afternoon, I felt a few contractions, but they stopped, I figured because I had been busy all morning and doing a lot of walking that is why I had them.  My husband arrived home from work and I told him, I thought the baby was going to come this 4th of July weekend, we had invited some friends over for a barbecue, so I asked my husband if we should cancel those plans, because I was pretty sure the baby would come that weekend.

I was making dinner around 4-4:30 and I started having contractions that were 8 minutes apart but not too consistent.  Everything I had read, recommended going to the hospital when they were 5 minutes apart for an hour straight and I had not gone to the hospital with my first baby until they were 3 minutes apart, so I was not in a hurry.  I finished making dinner, fed my two year old.  We had our mid-week church service that night, so my husband was getting ready for church and I said “I don’t think we are going to make it to church, I think we should go to the hospital.”

I called my mom and asked if we could drop off Diego to her and she could take him to church.  So we went over to my mom’s house, took Diego inside, again, my contractions were not real consistent.  I got back in the car, my husband drove around the corner, and my water broke in the car.  My contractions became intense and back to back.  I felt a lot of pressure once my water broke as if the baby dropped down.  I told Jeff “I think I can feel the baby’s head, drive faster.”  We came to a red light, my husband stopped, I screamed “run the red light, go, go, go.”  There were cars in front of us, he really could not go anywhere, I said “drive on the sidewalk I don’t care what you have to do, get me to the hospital.”  My husband honked his horn and drove as fast as he could, running red lights, carefully of course, running stop signs, it was quite exciting.

When we pulled into the hospital, my husband was trying to get me into a wheelchair, but it felt extremely uncomfortable to sit, so I was insisting on walking.  We walked up to labor and delivery; I calmly said to the nurse I am here to have a baby.  There were 3 nurses in the check in station; they started getting paperwork and a clipboard together.  I calmly said “I mean I am having this baby right now, I think I can feel the head.”  The nurse looked at me as if I was joking, I think because I was rather calm.

She put the clipboard down and said “okay let me check you.”  I did not even put a gown on, took my shorts off, laid on the bed and the nurse said “Oh my, don’t do anything, don’t push, I can see a head.”  She screamed for a doctor, a crowd of doctors and nurses ran into the room, bringing in a lot of equipment, one nurse literally stabbed my arm with an IV, it became quite chaotic, in which I started to panic with all the chaos.  I who was able to walk in calmly all of sudden felt a  lot of burning and pain, which I believe because of the chaos I stepped out of my peace and got into fear which is why I started to feel a lot of pain, I had screamed a couple of times.  Thank God for this precious nurse that was in there, she grabbed my face with both her hands on my cheeks, looked me right in the eyes and said “Jessica, everything is okay, the baby is right there, just push, and you can have this baby.”  She brought me back to focus, I calmed right down, gave two pushes and this baby was out.  Emanuel Tomas Briggs, born June 30, 2009 at 6:24 PM, 7lbs., 8oz., 19 ½ inches long.  I think I freaked out because no one was really talking to me, everyone was just running around and doing all this stuff.  Even the doctor when he walked in, did not really say anything, which with my personality, I like to know what is going on, what the plan is.

I knew this delivery was going to be supernatural and quick and easy, which I was grateful for, but I did not plan on it being that quick.  We were at the hospital five minutes and we had a baby, we filled out all the normal questionnaire and paperwork after the baby was already born.  The nurses kept asking me why I waited so long to come in.  I tried to explain, I did not have contractions all day, when they did start, they were not consistent.

After going through this experience, I was able to pray differently for my third delivery.  I was very specific in praying for my third delivery, “Lord I desire a quick and easy delivery, but I want to have time to get to the hospital, get checked in, and within one hour have a baby.”  I figure one hour is long enough to have a baby.  Thank God prayer works, my third delivery was the perfect timing for me, I will blog about that next week.

We also went to birthing classes, even though this was our second baby and we had been before.  Someone recommended the importance of taking birthing classes with every child as a refresher, and I also encourage others to do the same.  Attending these classes helps me prepare mentally, helps me get in birthing mode.  It is also good for my husband, I think it helps prepare him to support and coach me; it’s a great refresher for both of us.
