Back to School is right around the corner, along with school supplies we need lunch supplies too, be sure to shop the Back to School deals at Lucky California (2840 Dublin Blvd. off of 580).  Although summer is coming to end we still have the summer heat here in California well into September.  So I am sharing some ways you can beat the heat.
First tip when you go to grocery shopping stock up on fruit.  I don't know about you but when it is hot, we don't feel like eating full meals and when we snack we want snacks that are light and refreshing.  Fruit is a great way to help stay hydrated, did you know many fruits contain over 80% water! Melons, such as watermelon and cantaloupe have the highest water content at 90%.  I naturally drink a lot of water, but my kids don't, it is nice to know fruit can help them stay hydrated.

Second Tip eat light! Keep ready-made salads in your refrigerator.  This can be green salads but also one of my favorites is a cold broccoli salad.  I love to make a large prepared bowl that we can snack on all week.  I also love to keep veggies like carrots and celery chopped, cleaned and ready to eat.  I will reach for these if they are ready to eat.  So as soon as you bring your produce home from the grocery store, wash and prepare it.  You can even store them in smaller containers, so if you are on the go, you can grab it and go.

For my broccoli salad, I use broccoli florets, chopped to bite size.  I combine a 1/2 cup to 1 cup of mayonnaise with 1-2 tablespoon of light brown sugar, depending on how much broccoli I'm using, a tablespoon of balsamic vinegar.  Once combined I add in the chopped broccoli and stir.  I lastly add in chopped bacon, or bacon bits whichever I have on hand and a handful of raisins.  Simple and delicious!  You can make it your own and change it up, I've added diced red onions and slivered almonds at times.

The last tip but certainly not least, when you cook, use the stovetop, grill, crockpot, and microwave as much as you can.  Avoid using your oven, it produces so much heat. Turn off extra lights and any equipment you are not using even the computer, all of these little things help keep the house cooler.

There are some great deals on meat this week, ground beef is part of the 3-Day Weekend Sale for only $1.67 lb!  Ground beef is easy to make on the stove top and they have so many other meats on sale great for grilling!  My go-to meals with ground beef are tacos, hamburgers, sloppy joes, nachos, meatballs for meatball sandwiches or spaghetti and meatballs.
