We are so excited about going to see Disney On Ice Worlds of Fantasy.  My three boys and I love attending the show.  Every time we have attended we have had a fun time together, making memories.  As a mom with little ones I really appreciate that they have an intermission time.  Makes it easy to take a potty break and not miss any part of the show.

My boys love to purchase a snow cone in one of the character cups; they drink out of those cups for months after the event talking about their favorite parts of the show during dinner time.  I love seeing the excitement on their face and hearing the thrill in their voices the days leading up to the show, during the show and after the show.

Clergy Appreciation Month is celebrated in October, and the 2nd Sunday in the Month of October is designated as Clergy Appreciation Day.

Make time to honor the clergy in your life, not only on this day or month but all year long.  I am grateful for national days and months because they get us thinking and talking about things that sometimes slip our minds.  Just like Clergy Appreciation Month, we are grateful for our pastors, music ministers, children’s ministers and should do much more for them, with a designated “Clergy Appreciation Month” the conversation or thinking gets started, through social media, commercials, Hallmark cards and many other ways.

Clergy members don’t always have a measure of the work they do, they don’t always get to see an immediate result.  Being in the people business sometimes the prayers, service, life changing messages that are preached and taught go without vocalized appreciation.  Sometimes the results of a great life changing message is not see for months and years to come.  A preacher or children’s church teacher can say something to an adult or child in children’s church that will mark their life forever, something that will inspire a dream, bring hope to someone who sees no light at the end of their tunnel.  Sometimes those people move away and never have the opportunity to say thank you for preaching that message, or worshiping with such passion and conviction that you inspired me to write music, or start playing an instrument.  A little girl or boy can be so moved by watching your life that they make right choices and go into a vocation of service after watching a clergy live a life of service well.

We the people don’t always see the hours of prayer, preparation and study that our clergy invest for us to receive hope, love, peace through the Word of God.  You don’t see the hours your pastor spends pouring over the Word of God and writing and re-writing their messages to get it just right hoping to help and change your life.  You don’t always see the hours the music minister practices singing, playing their instrument and practicing the presence of God so they can better serve us and lead us into the presence of God.  We don’t know how much work it is for the children’s ministers to study and prepare lessons, puppet skits, games and prizes to engage our children in the things of God.  Every so often all the kids join us in the sanctuary and as you hear the babies crying, the kids squirming I am so grateful for the teachers that volunteer and serve so our kids can enjoy and receive God at their level and so we adults can receive from the preaching of the Word without having to wrestle our little ones in the sanctuary.  You don’t always see the hours the church staff spend counseling, encouraging, praying with people, hospital visits, meals prepared and delivered to congregation members who just had a baby or going through a tough time.  Clergy members many times have families of their own, other employment while also running and managing a church.  However many children you have, you can think of your pastor as having 500 children, children he is praying for, believing in faith for our success and our goals and dreams, studying the Word to equip us with the tools we need to walk out our faith.

With all that being said, honor the clergy in your life.  Honor them as a family; it’s important to teach our children the importance of honoring the clergy in our life.  Make sure your church is honoring your clergy, if the church you attend does not have something in place to do as a group, speak to someone in leadership and get everyone involved in honoring your minister.  If you are involved in a team or department in your church, have your team contribute towards a group gift.

Here are some ideas for you to honor your clergy:

Write a note of appreciation, give money in a card, buy flowers for them, give them a gift card to their favorite restaurant, give them a gas gift card for their vehicle, pay for the vehicle to be washed and detailed, cook them a special meal or bake them your special dessert, a gift basket of their favorite things or fruit basket, the possibilities are endless.

Listen when your clergy speak, many times they will tell you their favorite place to shop, or hobby they enjoy, compile a list throughout the year and know different ways you can honor them.  Honor them on their birthday, Christmas time, Special Anniversaries (Wedding Anniversary, Anniversary of Starting the Church), Clergy Appreciation Month and also just because.  It’s nice to receive a gift on your birthday but it’s especially nice to receive a gift just because someone thought of you.  You can celebrate all month long, with the help of everyone, you can schedule and plan on gifts and surprises presented to your clergy every day in October, or each Sunday and mid-week Service.

Remember it’s the thought that counts, whatever size budget you are working with, your thoughtfulness and appreciation is appreciated!

Clergy Appreciation Month

Clergy Appreciation Month is celebrated in October, and the 2nd Sunday in the Month of October is designated as Clergy Appreciation Day.

This post is to encourage you to avail yourself to pre-marital counseling if you are planning on getting married.  If you are already married, it’s never too late to discuss topics that you haven’t discussed and to have someone help you in discussing those topics or maybe topics you have discussed but just don’t see eye to eye on, that IS when you want a third party involved to assist.  If you are already married share this with someone you know who is going to get married or has a desire to get married in the future.

We had pre-marital counseling through the church we were married at.  We met with our local pastor and other couples in the church.  We filled out a questionnaire about major topics you face when getting married and in marriage.  We not only discussed marriage topics, but also wedding preparation and planning for our wedding.  We were engaged nine months so we had ample time to go through this process, but I’ve also watched couples in our church who were engaged and married within three months avail themselves to pre-marital counseling and its benefits.  I will share on a later blog post about one of my favorite assignments we received in pre-marital counseling.

I’m grateful that we discussed our thoughts, opinions, beliefs on the major subjects in life, so we knew who we were marrying.  That is a big key if you are in the process of getting married, desire to get married or have a friend that is getting married.  Be sure to discuss your belief system on: faith, parenting, finances, career, dreams, goals, purposes.  You should discuss before you are married, how many kids you both desire, if you want to have kids right away or wait.  Will you both always work, or will your wife stay home once you start a family.  Nothing has to be set in stone, but it should be discussed so you know how the person you plan on spending the rest of your life with thinks about these important issues.

It’s not say you have to agree about everything and think exactly the same about every topic, but you should be aware of how your soon to be spouse does think to some degree.  You should ask yourself can you live with someone the rest of your life who wants to never have children, or with someone who wants ten children.  Or what about career, can you marry, love, support someone who has a career that requires a lot of travel or is in the military and requires a lot of moving around and what about religion, and how you plan on raising your children.  What about finances, do you know how the person you plan on marrying handles finances, do they have a lot of debt, are they a saver, planner.  These are huge issues that will be part of your life as you join together in marriage.

It’s not that you have everything figured out before you get married, because no matter how much you plan, prepare and think you know your spouse once you are married, you change, they change, life happens and you need to adjust.  When you have an open line of communication and know the core values of the person you are marrying the adjustments you have to make throughout life are easier to make with someone who is truly committed to your relationship.  When you know you are in this together forever, you can face and overcome anything together.

You might say to yourself well we can play 21 questions with each other and do this on our own, it’s different and more beneficial to have someone who is married and been down this road advise you in this.  I remember being young and in love you don’t always think straight, you get caught up in the emotion of being in love and head over heels that you don’t always say your true feelings or opinions, sometimes you don’t even know what you really think on certain subjects, because you’ve never been married before, or you haven’t lived on your own and operated a budget, if you are like me I lived at home with my parents until I was married.  Yes I had jobs and my own income, but I didn’t have the responsibility of a mortgage and all the bills that come with living on your own, let alone living with another person and having two lives, two different people come together as one.

It’s nice to know before you marry someone what their family is like, because when you marry someone you also marry their family.  You inherit their parents and siblings and everyone else in their life.  Have you watched Everybody Loves Raymond?  Wouldn’t you want to know beforehand if you are going to have Mrs. Barone for a mother-in-law?

If you attend a local church, inquire if they offer pre-marital counseling most do, and if they don’t they can help you find where to obtain those services.  If you don’t attend a church, you can Google pre-marital counseling and find services near you.

Through pre-marital counseling you will learn how to effectively communicate, how to resolve conflicts, discuss major topics and also learn how your spouse receives love, have you heard of the Five Love Languages, I’ll blog about that another time.

I once heard someone say marriage can be the closest thing to heaven on earth and also the closest thing to hell on earth.  Marriage takes investment, it would be wise to invest before you are married, build a strong foundation.  If you are already married don’t count yourself out or think it’s too late.  Counseling is not only for those with major issues, the way I see it if you’ll avail yourself to counseling and wisdom from others in the small things, then if you do face major things you will have a support system already built into your relationship.

Planning on getting married or already married decide to work on becoming a better you throughout all the different seasons in life.

In an earlier blog post I wrote about the Six Month Rule.  When desiring to make a larger purchase or have a new payment for example automobile or increase in rent/mortgage payment you save that payment or the difference in payment for six months before acquiring your large purchase.

Here is another version of the six month rule to practice in your life.  When you receive a raise or new job with increase, you don’t use that increase in your regular budget.  For six months you take that increase and do one or a combination of these things: Give, Pay off Debt and Save.

For example you get a raise making $500 more a month.  If you are completely debt free, you can use that money to give to others, give to your local church, give to family members.  There are many times I hear people say I would like to help my parents, or I would like to give more to my local church but then when increase comes in our life, we end up spending that money on ourselves, or not even really seeing a difference in our living, due to eating out a little more, maybe driving a nicer car, etc.  So if you are debt free, try using this money that you were living without before to help others; your church, family, friends, etc.

If you have debt, and you receive an increase or promotion, for the first six months or longer if you will use that money to attack your debt, you can see some real progress in becoming debt free.  Again, you were making it before you had that raise, I know we all can use more money, but chances are if you are in debt and receive a raise or promotion you end up getting deeper in debt due to poor financial choices.  How much better would it be for you to take that money and apply it towards being debt free.

Using the increase for savings is another great way to save money.  Many people would like to save more money just don’t see how they can do that each month, or save a small amount and sometimes use some of that money.  Again, since you were making it before your raise, new job, or increase, why not use the opportunity to save some money and build an emergency fund, especially if you don’t have any savings, and if you do, to increase the savings you do have at a faster rate.

Of course you can adjust this six month rule to work for you and your specific financial situation; you can also do a combination. For example if you have debt and also the desire to give more, why not use half of your increase to apply towards your debt and half of your increase to give to your local church or choice of charitable contribution.  Or if you are debt free, saving half and giving half, whatever works the intent is, instead of just allowing this increase to absorb itself into your current budget and not really see a tangible difference, put your increase to work for you.  Instead of just going out and getting a bigger house, or bigger car, and acquiring more debt why not think of others, or help your parents get new tires for their car, or even a brand new car.

My husband and I have done different variations of the six month rule at different times in our life and we were very happy with applying this in our life.  We have used an increase in pay or at times “commissions” (if you are in sales) money that we were not counting on in our regular budget plan, to attack debt, to give more in our local church, and at times to save and build our emergency fund.

Too many times we think if we get this raise or new job, our finances will be better off, only to find, yes it makes things a little easier, but unless you have a plan and purpose for that increase it is quickly absorbed into our life with no real difference.  Someone taught us this six month rule and it has benefited our life, so I thought I’d share with you.

Six Month Rule-Part Two

I have three boys, one is extremely picky, one is a little picky and one eats everything.  My extremely picky eater was a good eater when he was a baby; he became picky when he was around two years old.  There are a number of factors that come into play with his pickiness, I know I ultimately enabled him and at times I feel like a horrible mom for this.  I hate that he’s not getting a balanced diet.  I hate that he doesn’t enjoy himself as much when it comes to meal time when visiting friends and other family members.

Here are a couple reasons why I believe he is so picky; or what some would call my excuses.  First he didn’t get his first tooth in until after he turned one, and as a paranoid first time mom, I didn’t think his gums could chew steak, so I fed him easier to chew foods, (not the same with baby #2 & #3, they ate off our plates, and ate everything) he did great eating peas, green beans, squash, I gave him lots of veggies, he ate them so even though I was an overprotective first time mom, not giving him milk and eggs until well after his first birthday he did eat a variety of things.  After he turned one and I introduced whole milk in his diet he only drank white milk, took the pacifier away at 6 months, took the bottle away at 11 months, never went to bed with a bottle, just giving some background, I didn’t spoil and coddle and only give him what he wanted he didn't have chocolate milk and candy all the time.

When he turned two, he got sick and for a two week time span was throwing up, lost a lot of weight, was dehydrated, would not move, it was a scary kind of sick.  Antibiotics were not working, thankfully after prayer from the elders at our church who came to our house and prayed over him and after standing on scripture for his healing we saw an immediate recovery.  After those two weeks of throwing up, he went through a stage where he wouldn’t touch milk, wouldn’t drink milk, only water and apple juice for about three months, eventually he went back to milk but it was during this time he became picky in his eating and wouldn’t budge.    Then you also throw in the times my husband and I have gone on a low carb eating trend, so when we ate steak and salad, I happily whipped up a box of mac n cheese for the boys, because it was easy and I wasn’t eating potatoes and other side dishes, so it was easier to feed them typical kid food (chicken nuggets, corndogs, etc.) and us to stick to our diet plan, not the brightest thing to do to instill healthy eating habits in your children.

I’ve been through many phases of dealing with a picky eater.  I am a perfectionist, type A personality, first born, whatever you want to call it.  So I went through the control phase of I am in charge, you are not, you will eat whatever is placed before you.  We took away all snacks and said if you don’t eat this you don’t get anything until breakfast.  We spent hours sitting at the dinner table trying to get him to finish his meal.  We had dinner times, where I was crying, he was crying and feeling completely at a loss of what to do.  I went through the stage where I didn’t care anymore and was like just eat whatever I don’t care, I give up.

Just to give you an idea of how picky I am talking about.  My extreme picky eater when it comes to meat only eats chicken, hotdogs and fish sticks no beef of any kind.  He’s tried a hamburger, and other meat products, but other than a coaxed one bite, won’t touch it.  He will eat hash browns, but not mashed potatoes, not French fries, what kid doesn't eat French fries, not that they’re healthy for you but still.  He’ll devour spaghetti, yet will take what seems like hours to eat lasagna.  We are not talking about making him eat lentils and kidney beans.

My husband and I are both adventurous eaters, we will try anything and enjoy most things.  That being said we both were picky eaters when we were kids, which gives me hope for my kids.  My mom tells me I was extremely picky until I went to elementary school, and each year of school I adventured out and started trying new things and liking them.  My husband didn’t become an adventurous eater until he married me, he is known by his siblings and friends as the guy who ate crackers for lunch.  You would frequently find him only having wheat thins or Ritz for lunch.

My extremely picker eater, tries a lot more new foods now.  He actually takes initiative in trying new things, I’m grateful and hopeful.  When I tell people I have three boys, they frequently reply they will eat you out of house and home, which actually sounds appealing to me since my two older sons eat like birds.

I have come to the place, where I don’t want to fight at dinner time, we expect him to take a bite and try what is for dinner, but if he doesn’t eat, he doesn’t eat.  I don’t punish him as long as he tries something, now he doesn’t get a giant bowl of ice cream either after not eating dinner, but if he gives it a honest attempt, he can have fruit and other snacks in the evening.

I don’t make completely different meal options, but when I can for the sake of my sanity and peace in
our home, I modify meals to accommodate.  For example when I make pork enchiladas, I’ll make a quesadilla for my sons.  I have the tortillas and cheese out for the enchiladas, it’s much quicker and easier and everyone gets to sit together and eat in peace, that’s my goal to eat as a family happily.  You’ve heard the term pick your battles, that’s the phase I am in right now.  There are some things he has to force his way through, like I won’t make spaghetti for them and lasagna for us, when we have lasagna, he has to eat that even though he is the last one up from the table because it takes him longer.  When we barbecue hamburgers, I’ll make them a hot dog and if we have left overs of a meal they enjoyed then I’ll let them have leftovers the next day.

Thankfully my youngest son eats everything, all types of meat, broccoli, asparagus and other veggies, salad, everything, at least I have one easy eater.  My second born son is somewhat picky but not as much as my first born, which I think the pickiness he has is from watching his older brother’s struggle with food.

If you have kids who are great eaters, thank God every day, it really is a blessing!  If you have a picky eater like me, don’t give up introducing new foods.  Every chance we get we encourage trying new things, but I won’t fight anymore or stress over it or beat myself up about it anymore.  I believe and hope he’ll grow out of this, even if it’s when he gets married and will try new food because he’s fallen head over heels for his wife, I pray it’s earlier for his benefit not only mine.  Food is great way to travel the world without leaving your home.  Food can be a creative outlet, and food has a way of bringing people together.

Do you want to save money without clipping coupons?  Download these free apps that pay you cash for the things you already buy at your favorite stores.  You can click the Ibotta Image on my page to download easily.  Even from a computer, you enter your phone # it will send you a text so you can download on your phone.  Thank you for using my link I receive referral money once you redeem your first offer!

Ibotta, Shopkick Shopmium, and Target Cartwheel are the apps I use frequently.  I have used all of the above apps but I must say Ibotta is my favorite.  It’s easy to use and the money is immediately deposited in your PayPal account within 24 hours.  If you don't have a PayPal account you can cash out your earnings on a Starbucks gift card, Regal Movie gift card or iTunes gift card.

Ibotta is also my favorite because the rebates they offer are on items that I buy.  Too many times, money saving apps encourage you to buy things you weren’t planning on purchasing, so yes you saved money on it, but you wouldn’t have purchased it on your own.

With Ibotta you’ll find rebates on Milk, Ziplock Bags, Cereal, and things that most people purchase every week.  There is a task you complete to unlock the offers, simple tasks, such as learning a fact, watching a video, posting on Facebook and no more than three tasks to unlock an item, sometimes only one task.

Once you have purchased the items, you verify your purchase by scanning the bar codes on the items and submitting a picture of your receipt.  Another benefit is if you use coupons, you can use your coupons at the store and save money and then submit your receipt and save additional money with the app.  There are offers for other things as well not just groceries, movie tickets, restaurants, apparel and much more.

One time they had a $15 rebate when you purchased 2 Campbells Slow Cooker Sauces which were $1.98 a pack and a slow cooker.  I purchased the 3 items and after my rebate it was $8 for a crockpot and 2 sauces that made for easy meals!

You could have purchased the smaller slow cookers and ended up spending like $2, but I actually needed a new slow cooker so I purchased the full size crockpot.  Click on the picture below to start saving money today!

Shopmium works just like Ibotta, but they don’t seem to have as many frequently used items like Ibotta.  I usually only find a deal I can use every other month or so.
To receive a FREE Lindt Chocolate bar use my referral code: YHKEMCWP

Shopkick you earn KICKS for just walking into certain stores.  You may be able to scan some items in the store with your phone to earn more kicks and if you register the card you pay with you can also earn kicks when you pay.  You then redeem your Kicks for the gift card of your choice.

Target Cartwheel is mobile coupons and also sometimes you can add offers like 40% off kids’ clothes or different items.  You then have the cashier scan the bar code right on your cell phone and you receive the savings.  NOTE: you can only have a set number of deals added to your Target Cartwheel at a time, so it’s best to only add the ones you are planning on using, no need to add all the deals.  Also these expire much quicker, some run all month long, but most are to use within the current week.

October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month.  I know most women are so busy taking care of others they forget to take care of themselves.  Too often women and mothers are wrapped up in our family with work, home, breaking up sibling fights, making sure our husband has what he needs, scheduling baby well visits, kids dentist and eye appointments that we sometimes don’t make the time to schedule our own doctor appointments.

I am grateful for the church I attend our pastors frequently remind us to take care of our bodies, to eat healthy and exercise.  Our pastor is a big promoter of physicals and colonoscopies.  I personally know members in our church whose lives were saved as a result of following through with recommended medical examinations.

Preventive care is the best care, many times; if you detect things early, you can attack it properly and beat it.  This is true in our everyday lives, our spiritual lives, financially and in regards to our health.

Breast cancer is the second most common kind of cancer in women. About 1 in 8 women born today in the United States will get breast cancer at some point.

The good news is that many women can survive breast cancer if it’s found and treated early.

If you are a woman age 40 to 49, talk with your doctor about when to start getting mammograms and how often to get them.

If you are a woman age 50 to 74, be sure to get a mammogram every 2 years. You may also choose to get them more often.

Don’t wait till your 40, make it a habit now at whatever age you are to take care of your body and be mindful of your health.

Talk to a doctor about your risk for breast cancer, especially if a close family member of yours had breast or ovarian cancer. Your doctor can help you decide when and how often to get mammograms.

Tips for Performing BSE (Breast Self Exam) - from www.BreastCancer.org
Few women really want to do a breast self-exam, or BSE, and for many the experience is frustrating — you may feel things but not know what they mean. However, the more you examine your breasts, the more you will learn about them and the easier it will become for you to tell if something unusual has occurred. Breastcancer.org believes that BSE is an essential part of taking care of yourself and lowering your risk of breast cancer.
  • Try to get in the habit of doing breast self-examinations once a month to familiarize yourself with how your breasts normally look and feel. Examine yourself several days after your period ends, when your breasts are least likely to be swollen and tender. If you are no longer having periods, choose a day that's easy to remember, such as the first or last day of the month.
  • Don’t panic if you think you feel a lump. Most women have some lumps or lumpy areas in their breasts all the time. In the United States, only 20% of women who have a suspicious lump biopsied turn out to have breast cancer.
  • Breasts tend to have different “neighborhoods.” The upper, outer area — near your armpit — tends to have the most prominent lumps and bumps. The lower half of your breast can feel like a sandy or pebbly beach. The area under the nipple can feel like a collection of large grains. Another part might feel like a lumpy bowl of oatmeal.
  • What’s important is that you get to know the look and feel of your breasts' various neighborhoods. Does something stand out as different from the rest (like a rock on a sandy beach)? Has anything changed? Bring to the attention of your doctor any changes in your breasts that last over a full month's cycle or seem to get worse or more obvious over time.
  • You may want to start a journal where you record the findings of your breast self-exams. This can be like a small map of your breasts, with notes about where you feel lumps or irregularities. Especially in the beginning, this may help you remember, from month to month, what is “normal” for your breasts. It is not unusual for lumps to appear at certain times of the month, but then disappear, as your body changes with the menstrual cycle (if you are still menstruating). Only changes that last beyond one full cycle, or seem to get bigger or more prominent in some way, need your doctor's attention.

It is not unusual for lumps to appear at certain times of the month, but then disappear, as your body changes with the menstrual cycle (if you are still menstruating). Only changes that last beyond one full cycle, or seem to get bigger or more prominent in some way, need your doctor's attention.

Before my husband and I were married we went through pre-marital counseling through our local church.  I had a great experience and will share a post very soon on one of the greatest and fun assignments we received in pre-marital counseling.

During our pre-marital counseling appointments we discussed a lot of different topics; faith, finances, family, goals, and so much more.  One of the things we discussed was our thoughts on starting a family, how many children we both desired, and when we anticipated starting our family.

This post is not to say this is what everyone should do, I am sharing what we did and how it helped us.  I believe everyone should decide for themselves what is right for their family.  The major key is for the two of you to be in agreement, be aware of each other’s desires and not enter your marriage relationship clueless about your spouse’s beliefs.

When the topic of having children came up in pre-marital counseling we both without previously discussing it with each other wrote in our questionnaire that we wanted four children and we wanted to wait five years before we started having children.  We were in are early 20’s, we wanted to travel together and we were in brand new careers.  Not living together before marriage we wanted to get to know each other and build our relationship foundation before starting our family.

I am grateful we had the same desire but two years into our marriage I started to have the baby itch.  I had quite a few friends who were married around the same time we were married and every single one of them either came home from their honeymoons pregnant or were pregnant within six months of being married.  Watching all my friends excited about their new babies and being surrounded by people talking about pregnancy and all things baby related had me rethinking my decision to wait five years.  We had been married two years, had traveled some, settled into married life and I was thinking “why wait any longer?”

When I brought this to my husband he wanted to stay with our original plan.  He encouraged me to not get in a hurry, and that children would come we should enjoy each other, because once we had kids life would change forever.

After quite a few discussions about this and me not wanting to wait and putting the press on him my husband suggested we meet with our pastor and discuss the situation.  Our pastor encouraged us to stay in unity and stay in agreement with whatever decision we made.  He also encouraged me to remember that we had discussed this decision in our pre-marital counseling appointments and I had agreed that we would wait five years to have children.  I am very grateful that we had a pastor to walk us through this conversation.  I wasn’t exactly excited after our meeting because I had changed my mind, why should I have to stick to our original agreement?  I remember crying and still having a strong desire to have a baby and waiting three more years seemed like forever at the time.

When you get married the question about having children immediately comes up in almost every conversation with people from your parents and in-laws who want grandchildren, including the grocery store clerk who you tell you are a newlywed.  I am so grateful for the input from our pastor.  I had people telling me that I should just “forget” to take the pill and get pregnant if I wanted to have a baby.  That is the worst advice anyone can give and I’m grateful I didn’t act on that.  I knew I wanted my husband to “want” to have children and it not be me tricking him into having kids.  I wanted him to be excited about being a father and enjoy every part of the process of starting our family.

I went away from that appointment with our pastor and really spent some alone time with God, yielding and surrendering over that desire to start our family.  I asked God to help me wait joyfully and not feel out of place amongst my friends who were all starting their families.  I asked God that if He would so graciously speak to my husband when it was the right time to start our family which would hopefully be before five years.  I remember that moment, I truly received the grace to wait, I never once felt that same strong desire, of course I still thought babies were cute when I was around them, but it wasn’t that feeling of emptiness that I felt before.  It wasn’t the feeling that I was missing out on something but rather I was going to enjoy it when it was my time.

On our Hawaii Cruise
Well four years into our marriage right after a 15 day cruise to Hawaii my husband came to me and asked me if I was ready to have a baby.  He came all on his own I had never again hinted or brought up starting our family.  I am so grateful to God that we had that precious time together.  I love my children, I love being a mom, but it’s so true, once you have children your life changes forever and there is no going back.  I am grateful for the wonderful memories we have of just the two of us being married so young (me 21 and my husband 20).  I am grateful we had enough time to enjoy each other and mature.

I’m grateful for the traveling we did, the opportunities we had to serve in a great way in our church, mission’s trips, and other community involvements.  Not that you can’t do those things with children, but it takes a lot more planning and preparation to travel, volunteer, or do anything when you have children, you need to consider their schedule, line up babysitters, and with children comes all the “stuff” diaper bags, play yards, swings and so much more to carry along.

I am grateful to God that He really does provide grace for whatever situation we face and that He walks through life with us loving us and caring about every detail.  I am grateful that he changed my husband’s heart as I surrendered this desire over to Him.  God has done this many times on other occasions as well, as I’ve prayed for my husband and turned over situations to God, God has been faithful!

If you know a couple who is getting married share this post with them.  If you come across newlyweds whether they be friends or family don’t put pressure on them to have children, respect each person’s decision to wait or start their family right away.

I have watched other couples who were not on the same page about starting a family and how it negatively affected their relationship.  I have known both men and women who did not enjoy the pregnancy stage and enjoy their babies because they were not really ready to have children.  I know you can never be completely ready, but you should be on board to embark on this life changing journey.

Having children is a true gift from God and it should be cherished and enjoyed in all stages; conception, pregnancy and raising your children.  There is nothing that compares to having a baby; it should be a decision that you don’t enter into lightly.  You should be aware of the privilege it is to have babies and also aware of the investment it requires of you.

Husbands would do well to recognize the need your wife has to procreate.  God created our biological clocks and they can be accelerated by marriage or friends being pregnant.  Wives recognize the need your husband has to truly have you, all of you, most men know once you have children they have to share you.  Discuss lovingly with each other both of your perspectives and see the importance of unity at all costs.  Know that God cares about your hearts desires and He will help you if you seek Him for wisdom and His leading in every area of your life.

If you know couples who are not married yet but plan on getting married encourage them to have these huge discussions before they are married.
