I was invited to the opening night of Mary Poppins presented by the Fair Oaks Theatre Festival this past week.  This was the first time I attended a show at the Veteran's Memorial Amphitheatre.  We were pleasantly greeted by chickens, which I loved.  It felt like you were stepping out of the city and into a hidden gem.  My husband and I made it a date night which was fun to do something different.  A play is a great way to enjoy a night out together.
The theatre is outdoors under the stars which makes for a great date night or family adventure.  There were many couples and families in attendance.  All the kids I saw were captivated by it all, I would love to go back with my entire family.

Mary Poppins will run Friday, Saturday and Sunday from June 15th through August 5th, 2018 at 8 PM.  Tickets are $18 for adults and $10 for children 12 and under.  Students and Seniors 60+ are $15. The play is held at Veteran's Memorial Amphitheatre located at 7991 California Avenue, Fair Oaks.

The entire cast was great.  It always amazes me how these young children get so into character, the kids who played Jane and Michael Banks were absolutely adorable. Katie Veale who plays Mary Poppins fit the part perfectly.  Mary Poppins arrives on the Banks family doorstep and using a combination of magic and common sense, she must teach the family members to value each other again.  She takes the children on magical adventures and has a profound effect on the children and the grown-ups.

They sang all my favorite songs from the classic Disney film.  "A Spoonful of Sugar", "Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious", "Chim Chim Cher-ee", "Practically Perfect" and many more.  Michael Coleman the director did a fabulous job. The play lasted a little over 2 hours with a 15-minute intermission.

They had a snack bar that sold popcorn for only $1 and a variety of snack items and drinks. They also rented out seat cushions for $0.50 which I appreciated and recommend. We attended the opening night reception and were treated with ice cream, cookies, sparkling apple cider and champagne before the show.

Tips:
Bring a jacket or small blanket.  Although it was a warm summer night, it sure did cool down quickly and I was chilly.

The theatre has bench seating you can rent a cushion or bring your own.  I saw many who brought a pillow, that is a great idea.

No outside food or drinks are allowed. There are restaurants nearby, we went to Carmelita's Mexican restaurant which is around the corner and there is Fair Oaks Brew Pub right across the street.
