October is National Pregnancy and Infant Loss Awareness Month, October 15th is observed with remembrance ceremonies and worldwide candle lighting at 7 PM in whichever time zone you live in.  It is a day of remembrance for pregnancy loss and infant death which includes, but is not limited to, miscarriage, still birth, SIDS or the death of a newborn.

In October 1988, President Ronald Reagan Proclaimed October as National Pregnancy and Infant Loss Awareness Month.  “When a child loses his parent, they are called an orphan.  When a spouse loses her or his partner, they are called a widow or widower.  When parents lose their child, there isn’t a word to describe them.  This month recognizes the loss so many parents experience across the United States and around the world.  It is also meant to inform and provide resources for parents who have lost children due to miscarriage, ectopic pregnancy, molar pregnancy, stillbirths, birth defects, SIDS, and other causes.”

Too many families grieve in silence and feel alone.  1 in every 4 pregnancies end in the loss of a baby.  This is a statistic no woman wants to be part of, and yet we all either will experience or know someone who experiences infant loss.

In November 2012 a couple weeks before I was getting ready to announce my fourth pregnancy to family and friends I started spotting.  I know most women announce their pregnancy right away; I have always waited till after my first Dr. appointment with ultrasound confirming my approximate due date.  With Thanksgiving right around the corner I was planning on telling our family and friends then.  Some people do this because most pregnancies are considered safe after eight weeks.  I really have done this because once you announce you are pregnant it brings on the never ending questions and comments from people, I know they mean well.  I like to enjoy this beginning season with just my husband and I knowing, celebrating and embracing new life just the two of us.  I love that first sensation of having a good secret that is so special and precious.  In this day and age we live in with social media and everything in print or media, I think it is good to keep some things private even if it’s for a little while.

It was a Sunday afternoon when I first began to spot.  I asked for prayer later that night at evening service and Monday morning called and scheduled an immediate appointment, I had an appointment scheduled for later that week.  My Dr. saw me that Tuesday morning and ran some blood tests, my HCG levels and progesterone levels were low, my spotting had stopped, she recommended an ultrasound and more blood work to be done in a couple days.  I did not have insurance and the cost of an ultrasound would be quite costly, my Dr. called a friend who owned a 3-d ultrasound facility.  They were not a Dr. so they could not advise me on anything but they could at the least perform the ultrasound and verify a heartbeat.  My Dr. told me the ultrasound tech would not discuss the findings with me, they would perform the ultrasound and call her with the details and then she would call me, she had directed them to look for specific details.  I had prepared to pay something for the ultrasound, but the office would not receive my payment, I was so moved by their thoughtfulness and generosity in a time like this.  When they would not receive my payment I lost it, I had determined to go in that office strong and stay strong, well, that did not last.

My ultrasound was scheduled for Friday, I remember I was at a trade show for an event I was coordinating and I called my husband to tell him I would be going in that afternoon for an ultrasound. I was an event coordinator for a huge Christmas event that would take place a couple weeks after Thanksgiving providing gifts for families.  My husband left work and met me at the ultrasound place I was so relieved to have him with me.  Shortly thereafter my Dr. called and said that I had a low lying placenta, and based off the ultrasound images and my decreasing HCG levels she would estimate that I would miscarry in the next few days.  Not only was I facing a physical battle but handling nonstop phone calls for the event I was coordinating.  Working part time at another job and being a mom to three little ones.  I felt like I was in a whirlwind, and I felt like I had been hit and had the wind knocked out of me.

I remember praying for a miracle and hoping for the best and at the same time having concern about having a high risk pregnancy knowing that I had three small children to care for and feeling I was not strong enough for that.  My mom had experienced spotting when she was pregnant with me and her Dr. recommended bed rest she was a lot farther along.  My Dr. advised me that being only 8 weeks along, bed rest would not be healthy for me or my family, which I was grateful for, it relieved some of the pressure I was feeling.  I felt like I was walking on egg shells, trying everything in my power to do everything right.  Of course she recommended no lifting and to take it easier, but with 3 small children bed rest for 9 months was not feasible.  It was two full weeks from when I began to spot to experiencing my miscarriage.  Those were the longest two weeks of my life.  I did not have a D&C, I miscarried at home, I had a follow up exam with my OB GYN and she said I had passed everything naturally.

I remember needing the love and support of my mom but how hard it was to make that call, instead of sharing the joy of “I’m expecting” there was also a “but” I have started spotting and might miscarry.  I am so grateful for my mom and sister they came over and cleaned my house and helped with the boys.  I am so grateful for my husband who handled meals and baths and all the daily routine as I rested, cried, and was at a loss.  I am so grateful for my pastor and his wife who prayed for me and called to check in on me.  My pastor’s wife had also experienced miscarriage and she shared her love and support.  I really didn’t tell many people what I was going through, until after I had miscarried, especially because we hadn’t even announced our pregnancy.  The few who did know were very kind and offered support and meals, which was greatly appreciated.

After I had miscarried I was home on a Tuesday night alone, my husband took our children to church, I was watching church service via live stream thank God for technology.  I had hopped onto Facebook at some point that evening and a friend I followed mentioned in a post if you knew anyone who experienced infant loss to visit his daughter’s blog http://10kreasons.wordpress.com, this was the first blog that I have read every single post.  She shared her story of finding out at a routine 20-week ultrasound that her baby had no heartbeat and how God had her journal daily things she was grateful for.  This was so timely and exactly what I needed.  Reading her blog birthed the dream of one day starting a blog of my own and here I am.  It helped me realize I was not alone, she wrote how her baby mattered, and he was not just a blip.  One of my favorite scriptures is Psalm 139 it speaks of how we are wonderfully and fearfully made and how He knew us in our mother’s womb.  She wrote about other scriptures and songs that encouraged her spirit.

My sister in-law had miscarried just months before I did, she was 18 or so weeks along, never having experienced a miscarriage you don’t know what to say, I of course prayed and sent our love and support they live far away so I was unable to physically be there.  When she heard I miscarried she called and spoke with me on the phone, we emailed back and forth and I am so grateful she reached out to me and shared her story.

After miscarrying I took a couple weeks off, but had to jump back in and help with the non-profit event I was helping coordinate.  We also had Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year’s, and I had a two year old, four year old and six year old, the entire holiday season was a big blur.  In some ways I was grateful for all these things because it helped take my mind off things and I did not have the opportunity to be depressed, there was too much too do.  On the other hand, I had to deal with emotions that were stirred up by different things months even well into a year after my miscarriage.  In experiencing this loss, I learned to slow down and appreciate my children more.  I learned to cherish each and every moment and truly stand in awe of pregnancy and childbirth.  I have always cherished pregnancy and childbirth, I often wondered how anyone can say there is no God after being pregnant and giving birth, it really is a miracle, which is even more real to me experiencing loss and knowing 1 in 4 pregnancies end in loss.

A few things I’ve learned through this, when someone you know experiences loss, share your story if you have one similar so they know they are not alone.  Support them anyway possible, help with their other children, help with house cleaning, meals, and transportation of other children to and from school.  And most of all just be there, be a shoulder to cry on, a listening ear to allow them to talk about their feelings and what they are going through.  I know many people keep at a distance because they don’t know what to say.  Just say I love you, I am thinking of you, can I bring over dinner for your family.

There is a stigma at times that because you are a Christian believer, you don’t or should not experience loss or often looked upon as what sin did you commit to bring this on.  I remember going through the stage of beating myself up, rethinking in my mind everything I had done the weeks prior.  Wondering what I had done to cause this.  Some people ask why bad things happen to good people.  Although we don’t always know the reasons why we lose loved ones in our life or go through hardships.  We put our faith and hope in the one true King.  The one who knew from the beginning of time what we would experience in our life.  The one who is the greatest comforter and giver of the peace that surpasses all understanding.  The one who does not cause death but walks with us through our grief process.  The one who sent His one and only son to bear our grief and sorrow.  I know there is pain and grief when you lose someone you love but if you will allow God to comfort you and carry that grief for you, you can experience peace and grace like no other.  He can fill every void and heal every broken heart.  With healing it does not mean you forget the person you lost, or move on never thinking of them but even more so knowing the significance of their life, knowing the frailty of life and knowing the love of the giver of life.  You can live your life with heaven in mind, knowing you will meet again.  Your baby is in heaven!  I love reading books about heaven, I loved the book and movie “Heaven is for Real” the young boy Colton met his sister in his heaven experience, the sister the mom had miscarried and never even told Colton about.  I loved reading “I Will Carry You” by Angie Smith, also “Mommy Please don’t Cry” by Linda DeYmaz.  I look forward to one day meeting my little one in heaven.

Even with great love and support from family and friends I still had moments of loneliness, shame, fear, heartache, I can’t imagine how people go through the loss of a loved one without a support team.  It was difficult in the weeks and months after miscarrying to see other pregnant women, to see the babies in our church nursery.  Commercials, Songs, friends announcing they were pregnant, stirred up emotions. I wondered if this baby meant as much to my husband as it did to me, not realizing that he “couldn’t” fall apart like I did, someone had to care for our three children and handle the day to day responsibilities of a family.  It was actually when I was talking with another couple I knew who had lost their eighteen month old that I was able to talk some of these feelings out.  They so kindly and gracefully shared different parts of their story.  They encouraged me that even though I never met my baby, he or she was just as real to me as them losing their toddler.  They shared how both of them grieved differently and had moments of release at different times.  There were different stages in my healing process, forgiving myself, forgiving the situation, I never blamed God, but I questioned why?

I hope after reading this post you will be more prepared to help support a friend you may know who has an infant loss.  I hope this gives you greater understanding of the struggle in losing a baby.  Be there to love, support, help those in your life experiencing loss.  Do not stay away because you don’t know what to say.  Say I love you.  Take them dinner or a gift, let them know they are in your thoughts and prayers.  Sit with them and let them talk.  Don’t make comments such as “You can try again”, “At least you have other children”, “There is a reason for everything”.  Don’t diminish the significance of their baby no matter what stage they lose their baby.  The minute you find out your pregnant, you fall in love with this little human you have never met, every life is special.  Don’t ask them what they need, when you experience loss you don’t know what you need.  Take the initiative, to help them clean, transport other children, make a meal, bake dessert, etc.

You can encourage them to focus on all the things they have to be grateful for.  However acknowledge that there loss was real.  In experiencing a loss we know we have a lot to be grateful for, and yet we also know a part of our family is missing.  Acknowledge that pain and loss is real, I think too often when someone loses someone they love they feel pushed, forced if you would to “move on”.  We know life goes on, I think that is even more real to those who have lost.  Allow them to grieve however they need to.  Give them the time they need, you can get them out of the house for some fresh air.  Just do everything in love, with compassion, and sensitivity.  Ask yourself what would you want someone to do for you if you were in their shoes.

Scroll down to the bottom for some facts and tips if you are attending the show!

I loved every minute of this presentation and so did my boys (ages 7, 5 & 3).  There was a lot of action to keep their attention, throughout the entire presentation.

Mickey, Minnie, Donald and Goofy opened the show and made appearances between each set change to introduce the different “worlds”.

My boys favorite part was Toy Story, they loved the soldiers that danced, the claw and kite that came from the ceiling and the singing and dancing.

As a mom I greatly appreciate the intermission time for potty breaks, no one misses the show and it is nice to get up and stretch your legs.  As a mom of all boys I appreciate the mix of characters, and that it’s not all about princesses.  Though their favorite part was Cars, and Toy Story they were also entertained during Tinkerbell and The Little Mermaid with all the lights and action.

Disney did a great job with set design and costumes don’t they always!  The skating and effects were awesome!  Here are a few shots from Disney On Ice Worlds of Fantasy.

Especially if your contract is up for renewal or close to renewal it’s the perfect time to call around for other quotes.  If you are pleased with your current provider and do not want to change do not be afraid to mention other competitors prices or promotions, most companies will match or sometimes even do better.  As a long time loyal customer and someone who pays their bills on time, mention these great qualities to your service provider, you may receive a discount for your loyalty.

If you are on a month to month basis, call around and make sure you are receiving the best price for the service you are receiving.  Not being tied down in a contract is a plus when looking for the best deal.

When calling be polite, explain that you enjoy their service but after reviewing your expenses to continue with them you will need a discount.

On the other hand if you are having problems with your cable service or any other type of service, it is okay to call and point out that you are unhappy with your dropped calls or note your complaint and ask for a discount.  Utilize less than great service to obtain discounts and credits on your bills.

My husband and I have called our providers a number of times, especially with cable and auto insurance.  Just this week we called and lowered our auto insurance premium by 30%, we did not even have to switch companies.

If you are a good driver you may qualify for a good driver discount.  If you are a senior citizen and member of AARP, you may qualify for a discount on your auto insurance as well.

If the person you are speaking with says they cannot lower your bill any further ask to speak to a supervisor.  Do not accept the first no, you might hang up and call back and speak to someone else or call the next day, I have done all three of these things when negotiating to lower my bills.  A lot of companies have a Customer Retention Department, some of the people you speak with in a call center have no authority to lower your payment.  If the person you are speaking with cannot help you ask who do I speak with to lower my payment?

Be sure to review your statements that you receive for all your bills.  One time, I discovered some fee’s on our home water bill.  I did not understand what the extra fees were for it was listed as a long word and combination of letters.  I called the water company and not only did they remove the fee’s but credited my account for all the previous months those fee’s were on our statement.  Come to find out, it was a fee only homeowners pay, and since we were renting that property we were not liable to pay that monthly fee.  I did not have to pay my water bill for the next three months due to credits.

Research different options to save money on your bills, do not be afraid to ask for a discount and ask for specials they can offer you.  It is a good idea to be willing to switch to another company and be aware of competitor’s prices and promotions when you make this call.  Call with confidence and also kindness.

This post is to encourage you married couples to only speak well of your spouse.  Most people would think that is common knowledge but I am amazed at how many times I am with strangers and people I know and they speak badly of their spouse.  I know there are the extreme people who are unhappily married and speak horribly of their spouse all the time; I’m not talking about them.  I am talking about people who I know to have a good relationship with their spouse and yet they well say negative things about their spouse’s behavior, dress, career, parenting skills the list goes on.  It’s not only what you say to others about your spouse, but also how you say whatever you are saying to your spouse in front of people.

I remember early in our marriage we were at a social gathering and I watched as a husband berated his wife in front of everyone at the table we were sitting at.  I remember leaving that event and discussing this with my husband.  No matter how annoyed you are with what your spouse does or said, it is never okay to berate them to your friends, family and even strangers.  I felt humiliated for that wife.  This is not a man or woman thing, I have also watched as women speak badly of their husbands in front of people, and behind there back.

Think about what you are saying and how would you feel if your spouse discussed your bad habit, or bad day that you had with others.  Sometimes we are only saying it jokingly or in defense of something we are doing.  We like to bring up remember when you did this to justify our actions.  No matter the situation it’s not okay.  When the one person who has seen you in your most intimate and vulnerable places in life speaks badly of you and laughs at you it breeds distrust and heartache.  It’s one thing to be silly together and laugh together at a mistake or mishap, that’s completely different than laughing at your spouse and ridiculing their actions or feelings.

Sometimes it’s even those comments in front of people of “I can’t believe you feel like that” instead of listening to what they are feeling and trying to understand where they are coming from.  Sometimes it’s the tone you use in responding to a question or situation.  I remember one time when my husband snapped at me in front of people, I was embarrassed, thankfully I was in a good place at the time and realized it wasn’t personal and let it go.  There have been other times when I would have stormed out of the room in tears.  Watch your tone with each other, are you listening to what they are really saying, or just snapping at each other taking out your stress on each other.

As parents we teach our kids about not bullying, being kind, you reap what you sow, treat others as you would like to be treated and the list goes on.  Are we setting the example for them to follow?  Do they see and only hear you saying good things about their dad or mom.  I hear parents telling their children not to roll their eyes or behave rudely and yet I see many adults roll their eyes about what their spouse is saying or doing.  Why would it be okay for you to be rude to your spouse or anyone?

One time I was joking with my husband about not bringing me something that he had purchased for himself, I don’t even remember what it was but I said “You didn’t bring me one?  You’re such a butt face.”  Real mature right?  I said it right in front of our boys.  I’ll never forget the look on my kids’ face all three of their little eyes were on me, they heard what I said, they gasped as if saying “Mom, how could you call dad a name”.  I was totally wrong to do that.  I was not mad at him; I just allowed the wrong thing to slip out of my mouth.  I don’t let my boys call each other or others names, so why would it be okay for me to call my husband a name, even in jest.

Someone once told me that you should not go to your parents and speak badly of your husband, even in your moment of frustration or hurt.  As a wife we will have those moments, and we also learn to forgive and walk in love.  Once we tell our mom or best friend how your husband acted like a jerk, they might not be so easy to forgive and forget.

I understand when you need advice about a situation or need some encouragement, you should only go to the right people, people who will encourage you to pray for your spouse, love your spouse and forgive your spouse.  You should not go to your girlfriends who are going to berate your husband and relationship any further.  I have had disagreements with my husband and asked for advice about the situation, from the right people, and it also depends how you discuss the situation.  Do you fully reveal both sides of the story, “this is how I feel, and this is how he sees it” or are you only sharing your side of the story and leaving out details so people will side with you.

I am grateful when I have had those moments of hurt and frustration I have friends who share their relationship blow it’s and my mom has encouraged me on more than one occasion, to walk in love, to remember what a good man I am married to and how he is a good husband and father to our children.  It’s not just fights that I am talking about, sometimes it’s the job changes we have had, sometimes its schedule changes.  I remember one time being stressed over my husband’s work hours and our hurried schedules and feeling like we were two ships passing in the night.  A friend of mine shared how she too experienced that, she encouraged me to communicate with my husband and she shared how her husband was working nights and made me grateful that yes even though my husband was working long hours at least he came home every night and was sleeping next to me and at least he had a job, there are couples whose spouse is not working.

When a friend comes to you hurt and frustrated, be a good friend and encourage them to think on all the things they have to be grateful for.  Encourage them to think on how they fell in love and all the reasons why they love their spouse.  Don’t join in berating their spouse or encouraging them to be selfish and prove a point.  Don’t judge their spouse, and hold a grudge over a situation.  Someone has taught me there is no grace for another man’s offense.  That is so true; you can get over a personal offense a lot easier than when you take someone else’s offense.

I know in marriage there will be times when one or the other says something or does something that is not the kindest.  When this takes place instead of being quick with a comeback or immediately telling someone else, let it go!  Many times if you walk away and get some fresh air, and allow them some space, they will realize their actions and apologize or you will recognize maybe they had a rough day at work or “hangry” was talking (anger due to hunger).  Many times it is not personal or any reflection of your relationship.  Be quick to forgive and be quick to admit when you are at fault and ask for forgiveness.

The midterm elections are coming up Tuesday, November 4th.  The deadline to register to vote in California is October 20th.  You can register to Vote on-line http://registertovote.ca.gov/. You need to re-register to vote when you move to a new permanent residence, you change your name or you change your political party choice.

I often hear people complaining about our Government and the policies they put in place, my question for the complainers, “did you vote?  Too often we complain about something we do not like and do nothing to change it.

Voting is a huge way to have your voice heard.  You can also write letters to your local and state officials.  I have friends who work for state officials, and they value every letter and phone call you make. They desire to hear from we the people.  You do not have to be unruly or rude to have your voice heard, but with passion and conviction speak up for what you believe in.

Absentee Ballots are a very convenient way to vote.  No need to go to the polls, you get to vote right from the comfort of your own home.  Registered voters may apply for a vote-by-mail ballot for an upcoming election at any time.  The last day to apply for a vote by mail ballot by mail for the November general election is October 28th.

Too often we complain that our vote does not count, every vote counts.  It is easier to make a difference with greater numbers.  How will they hear your voice if you do not vote.

If you have a value system and way of life you would like to be present when your children grow then you should vote.  I think at times we forget the price that others paid for us to have the privilege of voting.  If we don’t vote, what example are we setting for our children?  If you do not value the importance of voting, what hope do we have that our children will recognize the importance of voting.

As a Christian I feel I have a responsibility to vote and to vote for leaders who promote bible principles.  We are called to be the light of the world, the salt of the earth.  Part of that is voting!  Christians should prepare to vote through prayer and study of God’s Word.  We should not support candidates whose proposals violate God’s Word on marriage, family, and life. We should vote for the best candidate regardless of party. We Christians should stand up and be as vocal as other groups.  A lot of groups want to claim free speech, liberty for all, and yet, I find too often we Christian’s are persecuted for our belief system, what about free speech then.

There are many countries around the world that citizens are oppressed and persecuted for their beliefs.  They are not allowed the privilege of voting, and often sacrifice their life and life of their families to preach the gospel.  In the United States of America you do not have to fear about your life for voting.

In this day and age we live in there are many who want to do away with the name and message of Christ.  It is our responsibility and privilege to vote, protect and preserve godly government.

I am grateful for the church I attend.  Our pastor strongly encourages us to vote!  We pray weekly and faithfully for revival for America, we pray for our government officials, we pray for our president.  As a Christian you should promote this type of prayer in your local church, and not only for your churches but in your families.  Pray together as a family for our nation, for our president and those in authority.  Teach your children the importance of voting and take them to the polls with you so they can see the process of voting.

A few weeks ago I was on my friend Diana’s (www.PantryOverFlow.com) radio show.  It was so much fun!  You can visit her site and listen to her radio show daily.  She asked me to share some travel tips here is some of what I shared.

My husband and I make an effort to go away every quarter, just the two of us.  Early in our marriage we came to know the need for this in our relationship.  Everyone enjoys getting away, my husband especially needs this quality time we spend together.  Quality time is his love language (I will share a post soon about the 5 Love Languages by Gary Chapman) .  Since having children we try and go away at least once a year as a family.

I know it costs money to travel and get away and a lot of people live paycheck to paycheck and don’t see any way they can take a family vacation or couple getaway.  It amazes me how many couples I meet who have never been away just the two of them or haven’t been away since they have had kids.  With a little planning and preparation you can have getaways with any size budget.    Here are some tips to help you.

Rewards Programs
Sign up for rewards programs through hotels, airlines and any other travel sources you use.  Many times hotel chains as well as airlines will run specials with extra bonus points for signing up.  If you or your spouse travels for work, many times you can sign up for these programs and use your work related travel to gain points for your family vacations or weekend getaways.

Utilize travel search engines, such as Travelocity, Orbitz, Priceline, Hotwire, Kayak, Trip Advisor.  Research prices on a variety of sites before choosing, and sometimes, when you find what you think is a great deal for airline tickets through one of these sites, if you call the airline directly or visit their site directly you can even still find a better deal.  If you have a flexible schedule, there is usually a box to click on these sites to check prices a couple weeks before or after your desired dates to find the best value.

Timing of Travel
When possible travel off season, or right after the peak season of where you are traveling. Not only will you save money, you’ll avoid the crowds.  In regards to timing plan out your vacations well in advance, this gives you time to save for your vacations and not go into debt.  Sometimes you can book last minute cruises and trips at half the price when travel sites are trying to offload inventory.  If you have money saved and budgeted for travel and have a flexible schedule, you can find some great deals.  The key though is to have the money saved ahead of time, budget in vacation money.  Say it takes you eighteen months or two years to save for a vacation, its better than not saving and letting five years go by since your last vacation or going into debt for vacation.  Who wants to getaway only to return to the stress and burden of the debt you incurred, does not help with fond memories.

Visitor Bureau
Check with the Visitor Bureau of the city you are visiting and check local on-line sites before you arrive.  Many times you will find discounts for tourist locations, transit, and other savings.  Check out the Calendar of Events, you might be in town when a great event is taking place.

Consider driving!  Gas prices are down, and this can come in handy when traveling with a family in avoiding rental car expenses and you will already have the necessary car seats.  I know road tripping with children can be difficult between the frequent potty stops and the “don’t touch me”, “don’t look at me” bickering amongst siblings.  Depending on how far you have to travel plan pit stops with the kids in mind.  Research things like parks, family tourist spots that you can let your little ones out of the car to run and stretch their legs.  If it works you could even stay one night at the halfway point in your road trip adventure.

Transportation
Learn more about transportation options, car rental, shuttles, buses, public transportation options, etc.  My husband has had to travel for work in a couple of his occupations and one time for example, he was not paying for the cab or rental car for his company trip, but he did a little research to where he was traveling and saved his company money by taking the airport shuttle to the public light rail station that took him directly in front of his hotel room.  Don’t only utilize saving tips for your personal budget but also for the company you work for, as a business owner I know they will appreciate you being frugal with their money.

I am not talking about being cheap, but frugal and wise with your finances.  Sometimes saving money on a rental car or other way can give you more money to enjoy a tourist attraction, or fancier meal out.  When you are traveling, think about quality with frugality in mind.

Meals/Eating out
Whenever possible book with a hotel that provides free breakfast, this will save you money and time searching for somewhere to eat.  Also something to keep in mind is if you will eat a large breakfast and a big lunch, you can eat lighter for dinner, which is typically pricier when eating out.  Many restaurants offer some type of happy hour, where appetizers are half price.

When booking a hotel try to book one with a refrigerator or small kitchen.  This enables you to have some snacks, drinks and food in your room.  You can plan a picnic lunch or dinner when you have this option available.

Vacation Rental Home or Condo
If you are traveling with a large family or group consider renting a vacation house or condo.  One time when traveling to Disneyland with my husband’s family, just the adults no kids, we rented a 4 bedroom vacation home; it was less costly than booking multiple hotel rooms.

Find out if you can offset some travel expenses by staying with family or friends for part of your trip.  Not only have I stayed at families homes or vacation timeshares, but I also have opened my home for family members to stay or even stop by on their way to where they are going for a home cooked meal and time spent together.  Just don’t drop in though, give them ample time to prepare for your visit.

Cruising
I think cruising is a very economical way to travel especially if you live near a cruise port.  Many times you can find cruises for the same amount per night that you would spend on a hotel room per night and it includes all meals and entertainment for each night.  Everything is right on the ship, no need to drive around and find things to do, there is plenty to do.  Although you can explore as much as you like off shore.

All inclusive Packages & Excursions
Research before you commit to an all-inclusive package or resort and cruise excursions.  They are convenient, but remember most times you are paying for that convenience.  One time when cruising in Hawaii, I wanted to sign up for the snorkeling excursion which cost well over $100 per person.  My husband recommended that we book snorkeling on our own once on shore.  We saved well over 75% by taking  a short walk from the cruise boat and reserving our own snorkeling adventure, we were provided the equipment, transportation to and from the ship and we had a great time, the location was beautiful and ended up being the exact same spot if we would have booked in on the ship.

Souvenirs/Shopping
When shopping for souvenirs, shop around.  Many times you can find the same souvenir you saw right on the beach shops around the corner or down the street a little bit for half the price.  This also comes in handy when traveling with your family.  If your kids are like mine, they love stuffed animals, and any other type of souvenir that is at their eye level.  When we visited the San Diego Zoo one time, we found the same type and size stuffed Polar Bear that was $40 at the Zoo at a local store for $10 outside the park.  You can plan ahead when you plan to visit places like a Zoo, or Amusement Park (Disneyland, Sea World, Lego Land, Six Flags Discovery Kingdom, etc.)  Pack and prepare souvenirs that you have purchased ahead of time and even throughout the year if you know you are planning a trip.

You can surprise your kids each morning at the hotel room with a stuffed animal, Lego set, T-shirt of their favorite character, coloring books, autograph journals, etc. at a much lower cost than what you will spend at the amusement park.  This not only saves you money but saves you time, you can spend more time riding the rides, swimming in the pool then overspending by souvenir shopping.

If you know shopping is important to the people you are traveling with, plan for that, again it’s not only about being cheap and saving money.  Vacations are supposed to be fun, with three boys I can get away with a lot of this because they really show no interest in shopping, they would rather be exploring, swimming, and actively participating in something.  If you have girls or a wife that likes to shop, budget for that.  Even if your budget allows for them to shop for and pick only one item, if that is important to them, make it happen.

Stay-cation
And last but not least have you heard of a Stay-cation?  It’s a vacation in your own hometown.  Depending on your budget you can work this idea a variety of ways.  At bare bone minimum costs you can stay at your own home, plan picnics in the park, tour the tourist spots right in your city or nearby.  You can eat most meals at home.  If you have some budget to work with, you can rent a hotel in your home town for all of the days or some of the days of your vacation time.  You save on the expense of renting a car, and airlines, but are still able to order room service and get out of your home.  My husband and I have done this a few times.  We stayed in town at a nearby hotel, sometimes for different reasons, sometimes due to not having a lot of time to take off work, sometimes due to our children’s school events, that we wanted to be at, but also wanted to get a way for the weekend but not too far.  Sometimes because we did not have a huge budget to work with but we knew the importance of just the two of us getting away together.  Many times people live in their hometown never experiencing the local tourist spots.  Stay-cations are great opportunities to experience what your city has to offer.

I hope these tips help you in planning and budgeting for your next family vacation or weekend getaway.  Life is too short to not enjoy life with the people you love, explore this big beautiful world we live in.  Use the gift of travel to learn and grow closer together as a family.  Many times when you ask your kids what they received last Christmas they don’t even remember, many of the toys are broken or outgrown.  When you ask your kids about a family vacation I find they will rattle off multiple memories they have.  It’s not always about the amount of money you spend on your kids but the time you spent together creating memories.

Vacation Budget Tips

Have you heard of Trunk or Treat?  This is often an event sponsored by a church or community group as an alternative to Trick or Treating.  A group of people gather typically in a parking lot, they decorate the trunks of their vehicles and instead of going door to door for candy and treats the kids go trunk to trunk.  As a host of a trunk you can pass out candy, prizes, have games like bobbing for apples, fishing for small toys, bean bag toss, ring toss, etc.

When planning on attending a Trunk or Treat, make sure it is open to the public, some groups’ host a trunk or treat for the group members and extended family only, and other groups have a Trunk or Treat open to everyone.

When it comes to decorating your vehicle you have the obvious pumpkins, spiders, and Halloween decorations.  With many churches they will ask you to be more family friendly in your decorating instead of going the scary route.  This is good to keep in mind with many toddlers that participate as well.

When planning to participate in a Trunk or Treat begin with picking a theme.  Then plan your decorations and treats you plan to give out with your theme in mind.  You can do a game with your theme as well.  Remember to plan your costume to go along with your decorated trunk.

Here are some Theme Ideas to help you:
  • Bible Theme (Jonah & the Whale, Noah’s Ark, Daniel in the Lion’s Den, Egyptians, Nativity Scene)
  • Movie Theme (Movie Theater Style, or any Family Friendly Movie)
  • Video Game Theme (Pac Man, Angry Birds, Frogger, etc.)
  • Board Game Theme (Candy Land, Monopoly, Sorry, Connect Four, etc.)
  • Sports Theme–Pick a Team or a select sport and decorate accordingly
  • Disney Theme–There is a large variety of Favorite Disney Characters to choose from.
  • Camping Theme
  • Beach Theme
  • Western Theme
  • Pirate Theme
  • Luau Theme
  • Animal Theme (Zoo, Petting Zoo, Aquarium, Pet Store, Jungle Animals, etc.)
  • Era Theme (70’s, 80’s, 90’s, etc.)
  • Christmas or other Holiday Theme
  • Popular Toddler Themes (Veggie Tales, Sesame Street, Backyardigan’s, Nursery Rhymes, Dr. Seuss)
As a host of a Trunk or Treat it’s a good idea to have other things available for not only guest but for the trunker’s such as a Snack Bar (You can sell food, or keep it simple to Apple Cider, Donuts and Hot Cocoa), Jump House, Hay Ride, Games/Activity Station, Puppet Show, etc.)

If your church is considering a Trunk or Treat as an outreach event, plan ahead to promote upcoming events, for example a Christmas Trunk can pass out candy as well as invitations to your church Christmas Play, or if your church participates in Operation Christmas Child, you can promote participation for OCC.

If you are reading this post and do not have young children any longer this is a great way for you to get involved and give back.  Do not count yourself out just because you don’t have kids, on the contrary you are a huge blessing to your local church or group hosting to participate.  Many times families with young children need to be with their trunk and also make time to take their children around to the trunks.  So single parents, grandparents, and young marrieds, get involved, be a blessing to your community and get trunking!  Halloween is still a couple weeks out, it is not too late to get involved, call your local church or group and get involved!

Events like this are a fun and safe environment for kids, in this day and age we live in, it’s nice to be able to participate in these alternative events and provide great memories for families.

You can research your community events calendars to find local Trunk or Treat Events as well as utilize Google!  For more theme decorating ideas search on Pinterest there are a ton!

If you are a church or group even a group of neighbors looking to have a Halloween Alternative for families Trunk or Treats are fun, you can also have a Harvest Festival.  A Harvest Festival is simply a party with festivities, food, games, hayrides, carnival rides, jump houses, and fun, you could have a chili cook-off and sell the chili as a fundraiser.  The church I attend has done a number of different things for families in place of celebrating Halloween.  We have done Harvest Festivals, Carnivals, Pajama Party in place of a Costume Party, Game Night (with games and food), a drive in movie in the church parking lot.

The important thing is to have a fun, safe time together as a family, create memories, your little ones will not be little forever.  I know many children who don't celebrate Halloween or participate in Trick or Treating, it's nice to participate in some of these alternatives so the children don't feel as if they are missing out on something.  It's also important to explain why we don't celebrate Halloween in the traditional sense.  I find children who are taught "why" will be more apt to follow with their children.  Children who are just told "we don't trick or treat" and don't understand why are more likely to trick or treat later in their teen years and take their children trick or treating due to that feeling of "missing out" and not knowing the true purpose.

Thank you for reading if you’ve enjoyed the content you’ve read above please share with your friends.

I am so grateful someone recommended to me to read “Supernatural Childbirth” by Jackie Mize.  This book can revolutionize your thought process on childbirth..  The planner that I am, I was able to read this book before I was pregnant with my first child.  I also purchased the audio version and would listen to the book on CD every day during my pregnancies.  After the success I had with my first childbirth which I attribute to the things I learned in this book, I read the book and frequently listened to the audio version each time with my second and third pregnancies.

I had all three of my babies in the hospital, without drugs and pain medication and free from complications.  Each pregnancy and childbirth experience is different; all three of my births were completely different.  For you pregnant women (if you are like me when I am pregnant I love to read birth stories) I will do a blog post on each birth story to give you more details.  Not to say I have it down perfect I also have experienced a miscarriage; I will share on another post.

The goal of this post is to encourage you that you can have a peaceful and wonderful birthing experience, free from fear and horror stories.  I also know every woman is different, some want to have all natural childbirth and birth their babies at home, some want to birth at a birthing center, some at the hospital.  Some want no drugs, some want some drugs and I know ladies who want two of everything they will give you.  I am not saying one is better than the other, I am saying you can pray and use the principles in this book to have the birth story YOU WANT.  Not what somebody else wants for you, but what YOU WANT.  In my opinion it does not matter where you have your baby or how you have it, as long as mom and baby are healthy, happy and safe.
Pregnant with First Baby

Just like when you first get married, people immediately begin to ask you when are going to have a baby, how many children do you want etc.  When you become pregnant people; strangers, family, friends, want to tell you all sorts of horror stories about pregnancy and childbirth.  They want to tell you about their morning sickness, about the times they went to the hospital and were sent home because of false labor and about their 24 hours of labor.  I want to share some good stories with you!    My first baby was born with less than 3 hours of labor, which is unheard of with a first baby, with my second baby we barely made it to the hospital in time, I did not even have time to get into a gown, and my third baby we arrived at the hospital at 6:30 AM and he was born at 7:11 AM, which was my favorite timing out of all three of my births.

Our bodies were created to give birth, and if you will allow the teaching in this book to work for you, you can have an easy pregnancy and delivery without complications and without fear.

Baby #2 Born
One of the statements Jackie makes in the book is the worst enemy of a pregnant lady is fear.  I think you should read books and prepare yourself as much as possible for pregnancy and childbirth, that’s why I am recommending this book.  You should learn about your body and know exactly what your body is doing during labor and delivery.  When we don’t know what to expect, fear can come in due to the unknown our minds can sometimes think the worst things are going to happen to us and due to other’s horror stories and what is portrayed in most movies, it’s what most women expect to happen, having unbearable pain, screaming and hating your husband through the entire process.  It does not have to be that way.

Baby #3 meeting brothers.
I am grateful I went to Lamaze classes with all three of my pregnancies.  It helps me get in a frame of mind or position to birth, even after attending classes and birthing my first baby, we went with the second and third pregnancies as well, and I read the book each time, and began to speak to my body the things I desired to take place each time.  I prayed for the right Dr.’s and nurses and as you’ll find in each of my birth stories, I had the perfect nurse for each of my birthing experiences.

If you know someone who is pregnant, trying to get pregnant or wants to be pregnant soon, please tell them about this book.  I personally know other women who have also read the book and had wonderful pregnancies and deliveries, it works.

I pray women everywhere can apply these principles and have wonderful experiences just as I have had in pregnancy and childbirth.  Children are a gift from God and He is the one who created our bodies to conceive, carry and deliver babies.  I know if you are a pregnant woman you have heard of natural childbirth, this is more, this is supernatural childbirth, tapping into using the Word of God, and prayer to have a successful and enjoyable pregnancy and delivery.

Supernatural Childbirth
